The Growth Playbook Stack
Organic, inorganic, geographic, and product expansion.
“At mid-market, growth has four legs, not one. The companies that stall are running on one leg; the companies that compound are running on all four deliberately.”
The Insight
Each growth playbook compounds differently. Organic is slowest but cheapest. Inorganic is fastest but riskiest. Geographic is moderate but complex. Product is compounding but slow to land. The mid-market operators who win are the ones who run all four consciously — not the ones who depend on one and hope it works forever.
01
Organic Growth
Same product, same markets, more customers. Driven by sales velocity, conversion rate, pricing power, retention. The cheapest growth per pound, but asymptotic — eventually the market saturates. Most healthy: 20–40% per year for mid-market. Below 10% organic and something is wrong with the core. Above 50% and you're likely under-investing in the other three.
02
Inorganic and Geographic
Inorganic: M&A as a growth lever. Buy capability, market share, or talent. High-risk (2/3 destroy value) but fastest. Geographic: take existing product to new markets. Moderate risk, moderate speed. Both require cash and executive attention. The right mid-market mix: 1-2 acquisitions per year if you can integrate them, 1 new geography every 18-24 months.
03
Product Expansion
New product lines for existing customers. Highest compounding potential — an additional product sold to the installed base multiplies LTV dramatically. Slowest to land — 18-36 months from idea to meaningful revenue. Needs separate team, separate roadmap, separate PMF process. Under-invested at mid-market, because it's less visible than the other three — which is exactly why it's where compounding lives.
The Takeaway
Run all four. Allocate deliberately. Track each separately. The compounding of four imperfect playbooks beats the perfection of one.
